Packers Season Wrap Up

So big deal that Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings made the playoffs this year.  We personally don’t give a fuck. Why? Cause the Packers made the fuckin playoffs too! And we did it with a second year starting quarterback named Aaron Rodgers. After going 6-10 last year, Rodgers turned up the heat and his pocket presence leading the Packers to an 11-5 season under head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy said in a post season interview that “he (Rodgers) had a very, very good year. We would like to say that Rodgers is living up to some of that Ted Thompson potential that we were lead to believe existed in this kid.  On the ground Rodgers finished with 316 rushing yards, 2nd amongst quarterbacks, and 5 touchdowns.  In the air, Rodgers finished the year with 350 completions on 541 attempts for 4,434 yards, 30 touchdowns, 7 interceptions and a qb rating of 103.3. Damn that’s a good as year… Those 4,434 arpicpassing yards were on ly 24 yards short of tying the Packers’ franchise record held by Lynn Dickey with 4,458 yards. Rodgers is the first starting quarterback to finish with back to back 4,000 yards in NFL history. His 30 touchdowns had him finishing the season ranked 4th in the league, the same with his 103.3 passer rating. Rodgers went pus 300  passing yards fives times this season (10/5 – Min, 10/18 – Det, 11/22 SF, 11/26 – Det and 12/20 – Pit). And who can forget that fantabulous display of football against the Ben Rothlisberger and the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers? In that game alone there was over 800 yards of offense in 36 – 37 loss. After Rodgers connected with wide receiver James Jones on a 24 yard pass with 2:12 left in the game, Big Ben had to put on the most spectacular drive and touchdown throw to secure a victory for Steeler’s Head Coach Mike Tomlin. Rodgers lead a very potent offense.  Ranked 6th at the end of the season, the offense smashed throughout the entire season. Rodgers went 12 games without throwing an interception, amazing.   In the redzone, the offense scored 54 out of 62 attempts, best in the league. In the 2nd quarter of the games during the season, Rodgers was his most effective with 189 completions, 2,490 yards and 16 touchdowns. The kid was effective for real, throughout the entire season Rodgers only tallied 2 delay of games. And thanks to special teams, Rodgers averaged starting the offense on Green Bay’s own 32 yard line. It is quite easy to say Rodgers had his best season of his career in 2009.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t the only Packer player having the best season of his career. Charles Woodson aka “The Associated Press’s Defensive Player of the Year,” had the best season of his 12 year professional career at the age of 33. Like the kids say ” 71% of the world is covered by water, the other 29% is covered by Charles Woodson.” That is the truthy truth.  In Dom Capers new 3-4 defensive scheme, Woodson locked down his island and still maybe big ass plays.  3rd on the team in tackles with 81 and 1st with 9 interceptions, Woodson made big play after big play. Woodson was the second Packer ever to be picked as Defensive Player of the Year after the late great Reggie White.  Woodson also forced 4 fumbles and tacked on 2 sacks on the season, so of course he was named starting cornerback for the NFC in the Pro Bowl. The same 2010 Pro Bowl in which Packers’ rookie linebacker Clay Matthews with also be attending along with Nick Collins. Clay Matthews though, is a big play making beast.  Matthews finished with 58 total tackles and an amazing 10 sacks for 63 yards. Let any opposing quarterback drop back in the pocket and chances were the #2 ranked defense in the league was going to be up his face.  Caper’s defense ended the season ranked #1 in the run and #5 in the pass. The defense was doing what the defense needed to do, point blank. The best thing about it… the Packers are the youngest team in the NFL. With only 3 players over the age of 30, the future is lookin hella bright! (Yes, I used hella.) With Ryan Grant rushing for over 1200 yards on the season, plus Greg Jennings and Donald Driver both tacking over 1k receiving yards, the Packers offense is ready to rock in 2010, as long as the offense line steadies up and gets it together.  Look for Thompson and McCarthy to add some depth to the offensive line. Rodgers was sacked 50 times, which is far too many by any quarterbacks coach’s standards. McCarthy said it best in his Jan 13 conference, “There’s only one team in my view that has success, and that’s the team that wins the Super Bowl.” So pushing forward, the building phase is done. Rodgers is our quarterback. Capers runs the defense. McCarthy wants to lead a successful team. It’s gettin it in time for the Packers in 2010. The Packers will have the Saints, Eagles and the Cowboys to contend with… The Packers have just been WRAPPED UP!!!

Packers womp Cardinals 33-7

Posted on 04 January 2010 by James Tucker

The entire Packers organization was running full throttle on all cylinders yesterday, as the Packers routed the Arizona Cardinals, 33-7. Aaron Rodgers lead the Packers offense to scores on 5 of 8 drives throughout the game. Rodgers completed 21 of 26 passes for 235 yards and 1 touchdown. Rodgers also ran in a touchdown from the 1 yard line for the second score in the first quarter. Through the air, Rodgers connected with 8 receivers, 7 of which caught the ball for 13+ yards on the day. Donald Driver lead all receivers with 6 receptions for 65 yards. Jermichael Finley caught the 5 yard touchdown pass from Rodgers with just over 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter. On the ground Ryan Grant and Ahmad Green combined for 93 yards on 23 carries and 1 touchdown. Head Coach Mike McCarthy def. needed the offense to come out having a big day, especially with Wild Card implications on the line.

Cornerback Charles Woodson, claimed his stake as the Packers defensive MVP this season. Going into the final game of the regular season with 8 interceptions already, Woodson picked off another from Cardinal’s quarterback Matt Leinhart and returned it 45 yards for the touchdown to closeout the 1st half. At 33 years old, in his 12th season and 4th with the Packers, Woodson is having is best overall season of his career.Big play after big play, Woodson has smashed opposing quarterback’s passes and locked down deep threat receivers, ie Cardinal’s wide out Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was thrown at 7 times last tight, only catching 3 balls for 17 yards and 1 touchdown.  Woodson has lead the defense all season with the help of rookie linebacker Clay Matthews also making big plays in the front 7.

Next week, Aaron Rodgers is looking to do the same kind of work that he put in yesterday back in Arizona. The Packers take on the Cardinals who will be looking for a very sweet revenge next Saturday.  Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has all of the playoff experience in the world and will be looking to Fitzgerald and wr Anquin Boldin to perform much better this next go round.  The Cardinals defense would really have to make some major adjustments to stop this potent Green Bay Packers offense, which did very well in the record books for the 2009 regular season. Look for this to be a heated match up with the Packers for the first playoff win in a while.

Damn good game…But…

Posted on 21 December 2009 by Rosebud

The Packers lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers 37-36 at Three Rivers Stadium. Minus the 1st play of from scrimmage for the Steelers, which lead to a 60 yard touchdown pass by Maurice Wallace from Ben Rothlisberger, the Packers played a pretty solid game. Rothlisberger just had the best game of his career though including the game tying touchdown pass to Wallace with zero seconds left on the clock. Funny how these two started the game with a td and finished the game with a td, probably never seen that before… Rothlisberger finished with a career high 503 passing yards off of 29 completions, with 3 touchdowns and 121.9 passer rating. Pretty much all of the Steelers receiving core had a big night.  Hines Ward and Heath Miller both caught 7 balls for 127 yards and 118 yards. Rashard Mendehall and Santonio Holmes both went over 70 yards. Mewelde Moore even ran a pass in from 10 yards out.  To say the least, the Steelers offense was movin’ son even though Rothlisberger was recorded as being sacked only 3 times (Packers rookie linebacker Clay Matthews dropped Big Ben for what should have been his 3rd sack of the game, but the refs were bullshittin).

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers dumped off the ball 26 times for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns. On what should have been the game winning drive with 2 minutes left in the game, Rodgers connected with Julius Jones for a 24 yard touchdown pass that capped off a 2 minute drive. With all the bull shit the game of football comes down to which team can make the biggest plays, in this case it was the Steelers at home.  On the ground, the Packers couldn’t get much movin and shakin, but Rodgers still tacked on 22 yards to keep his lead as NFL QB with the most rushing yards this season.

Charles Woodson had a big game leading the team with 9 tackles and 1 pass deflection, while Matthews continues to prove that he’s a ballish ass linebacker even as a rookie. Matthews finished with 2 sacks like said before but he was thoroughly in Rothlisberger’s ass all night long, no homo. This was probably the best game on Sunday Night Football of the season because both gunslinging quarterbacks were on fire. The Steelers finally broke their 5 game losing streak. The Packers are now 9-5 on the season, tied with the Dallas Cowboys in the hunt for the last playoff spot in the NFC.  Next up for the Packers is Mike Holmgren and the Seattle Seahawks who are 5-9.

Packers hang on to beat 49ers

Posted on 23 November 2009 by Rosebud

After trading field goals in the 1st quarter with the San Francisco 49ers, the Packers put another 20 points on the board thanks to two touchdown passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers and another field goal from kicker Mason Crosby to the end the half making Packers fans super excited. Rodgers connected with wide receiver Greg Jennings for a 68 yard touchdown and then 6 minutes and 20 seconds later with wide receiver Jordy Nelson for another 7 yard touchdown. It was in the first half that Rodgers got most of his work done, finishing 22 of 31 for 274 and 2 touchdowns. Not only did much of Rodgers work get doned in the first, but the 49ers’ quarterback Aaron Smith got his work done in the 2nd. Smith brought the 49ers to within 6 with just under 6 minutes left to play in the game. Smith threw three touchdowns to wide receiver Michael Crabtree (38 yards), tight end Vernon Davis (24 yards) and running back Frank Gore (10 yards). If it wasn’t for the the big play of safety Nick Collins’ interception of Smith’s pass to start off the 4th quarter to set up Ryan Grants’ 1 yard rushing touchdown, the game might have ended in the 49ers favor since they outscored the Packers 21-7 in the 2nd half. It was Grants’ 21 yard scamper for a first down that put the game out of the 49ers hands with 3:40 left to play. Grant finished with a big day of 29 attempts for 129 yards and 1 td. Greg Jennings also had a big day with 126 yards on 6 receptions and a score for 6. Mason Crosby went 3 for 3 in field goals. Aaron Rodgers finished as the #3 performing quarterbacks in most Fantasy Football leagues by putting up 344 yards on 32 completions and 2 touchdowns.

Favre, Vikings sweep Packers in Season Series

Posted on 03 November 2009 by Rosebud

It was like almost yesterday, Fuck you’re right it was almost yesterday except it was the day before, Sunday which Brett Favre returned home to beat the Green Bay Packers in what should have been a “we’re going to beat your ass now since you beat us the a month ago” game for the Packers.  Unfortunately for Packer fans and Favre-Haters it did not turn out the way. :-( Packers’ General Manager Ted Thompson’s too proud to be kicking himself in the ass for letting Favre go.  Shit he was probably hoping the Aaron Rodgers would finally stand up to good ol’ Brett.  Brett showed that he still has a few more tricks up that old dog’s sleeves.

Brett finished 17-28 for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns. BTW Favre threw 0 interceptions coming out to a passer rating of 128.6.  Rodgers showed that he still has some learning to do. Rodgers ended 26-41 for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns equaling a 108.5 passers rating. Which isn’t all bad except for the 6 sacks, 4 of which were def. Rodgers fault for holding onto the ball too long or not getting rid of the ball fast enough. And yes there’s a difference. Even fair weather football fans could tell that Rodgers needed to get rid of the ball not just Troy Aikman.

What’s interesting is that Rodgers lead the Packers in the ground game too with 52 yards on 5 carries.  Rodgers would’ve had a 100 yards on 10 carries simply because the Vikings defense was peeling off into coverage knowing that their pass rush would get pressure on such an imbalanced Packer offensive line. Kudos to rookie Tackle T.J. Lang for stepping up in the 3rd quarter to help bolster somewhat of a come back for the Packers when they had the momentum behind them.

The Packers scored 3 times in the 3rd bringing them with in four points.  Two times Rodgers connected with Tight End Spencer Havner by creating room in the pocket.  The Vikings were without their #1 Cornerback Antonio Winfield, which means the coverage over the top by safeties wasn’t always there and Rodgers should have tossed some more deep balls for Wide Receivers Donald Driver and Greg Jennings to make plays on.

Even with all of the hype and drama the Packers didn’t have a bad game offensively finishing with 351 offensive yards compared to the Vikings 355 yards.  The Packers had 2 more first-downs (21-19) and more net yards passing (261) to the Vikings (244).  However the offense needs a place to start which averaged on the Green Bay 29 thanks to the return of Aham Green, but wasn’t shit compared to the Vikings starting on their 46 leaving just more than half the field to play with.

On any given Sunday any team can win.  The law is the team who makes the biggest plays will when.  Brett Favre and Vikings played a very solid game and made more big plays than Rodgers and the Packers. Now at 4-3 and 2nd in the NFC Central Divison to the Vikings, the Packers have a serious gut check every week from here on out if they want to make the playoffs and look for revenge one more time. Hopefully the 3rd time would be the  charm.  The Packers really have to pick up the next 7 out of 9 games beating the Dallas Cowboys.  If not, then on to next year baby!!!

Packers smash Browns 31-3

Posted on 25 October 2009 by Rosebud

There was no doubt the Packers were clicking on all cylinders as they dominated the Cleveland Browns at the Cleveland Browns Stadium earlier this afternoon. The Browns were the first to put points on the board in the 1st quarter with a 22 yard field goal by Kicker Billy Cundiff. As soon as Quarterback Aaron Rodgers touched the ball in the 2nd quarter, he took control of the game. Rodgers first completed a 45 yard touchdown pass to Tight End Spencer Havner. On the next Packer possession, Rodgers dropped it off to Donald Driver for a 71 yard touchdown pass. Rodgers finished with 155.4 passer rating among his highest this season. Rodgers competed 15 of 20 passes for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Ryan Grant had a very solid 2007ish performance by trucking for 148 yards on 27 carries. Grant reached the endzone at the end of the 1st half with a 1 yard run putting the Packers up 21 – 3 before the whistle blew.

The Packers defense wasn’t in to giving the Browns much mercy. The Browns rush attack only managed 58 yards on the Packers stingy defense, with the longest carry only being 16 yards by running back Jamal Lewis. The defense also sacked Browns’ quarterback Derek Anderson twice, setting him back 18 yards. The Browns passing game was close to nill with Anderson going 12 of 29 for 99 yards. With 5:15 left in the 2nd quarter Cornerback Charles Woodson intercepted Anderson’s pass on the Cleveland 45 and returned it 25 yards down to the 15 yard line. The Browns managed just 139 net yards compared to the Packers 460 from the line of scrimmage. The Packers still committed 8 penalties setting them back 70 yards, but forced 3 fumbles with 1 recovery.

The Packers are now tied with the Chicago Bears at 3-2 in the NFC Central division. Next week the Packers will be looking for revenge on the Minnesota Vikings as they match up outdoors at Lambeau Field, the former sanctuary for Brett Favre. Nov. 1 is now the Packers do or die date if they are looking to make a statement or any noise for hopes of the playoffs this year.

Favre… That old son of a b!tch!!!

Posted on 06 October 2009 by Rosebud

Yes, you can say that again… For the “F#ck Favre Bowl” Vol. 1 at the Metrodome last night, Favre in fact pulled out his A-Game to defeat the Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, 30-23. Even though Rodgers went nuts with the numbers finishing with 384 yards on 26 completions and 2 touchdowns, Rodgers was sacked 8 times for 42 yards and 1 interception leading to Vikings score on the next possession. The Vikings defense was on point, which we shall get to later.  Favre finished with a 153.3 passer rating thanks to him going 24-31 for 271 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Favre without a doubt was the factor and played out the role like Kevin Costner in “For The Love of The Game” walking off the field as the victorious old guy.  Favre was so nice you can’t help but respect that fact that he was his normal Favre-self by throwing at least one interception by forcing a pass or taking a sack.
Most would have that Adrian Peterson was going to be the game decider, but AP only finished with 55 yards on 26 carries and 1 touchdown.  So it’s not like the Packers defense didn’t show up at all, except for Bernard Berrian getting off with 6 receptions and 75 yards and other receiver Sidney Rice rocked 5 receptions for 70 yards.  The whole stadium new that it was going to be a shoot out, that the old gunslinger from Mississippi would have to play his best.  Who knew that that old son of a bitch would do it too?  Packers fans woke up pissed and crushed that their old savior put a little ‘suck this’ at the end of his career with a Packers rival. Jared Allen finished with 4.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble.  In other words, he Favre-d the defense to holding the Packers to just 23 points and forced a Safety in the 4th quarter on Rodgers. Fantastic.
Going into the game the only suspects were to be the Vikings secondary, but Antonio Winfield canceled all of that talk with an interception to start off the 2nd quarter.  So now, the Vikings are the Fav for being first in the NFC Central division.  The Packers would be number two with the opportunity to redeem themselves on November 1st.  How sweet the revenge would be if the Packers cancel out the mental mistakes and win when it matters most. Love it or not, Favre-natic or Packer nut, that old son of a bitch is well worth your football respect.

Packers sacked by Odom, Bengals

Posted on 23 September 2009 by Rosebud

On the ground, RB Ryan Grant managed 46 yards on 14 carries, along with QB Aaron Rodgers tagging another 43 for a game total of 89 rushing yards. In the air, Rodgers threw for 261 yards on 21 completions and a single touchdown. Now back to Rodgers and the ground game, in particular the ground game Bengals Defensive End Antwan Odom was playing with Rodgers as it seemed like Odom was always making sure Rodgers was between himself and the ground.  Odom tied a single game team high with 5 sacks Sunday.  With starting Offensive Tackle Chad Clifton out with an ankle injury, Odom went to work on fresh OT meat put in to replace Clifton.  It was a long, hard and rough day for Rodgers which definitely didn’t end his way.

Just after a Charles Woodson interception returned for a touchdown to put the Packers up by 7, 21-14 in the end of the 2nd quarter, Carson Palmer completed a 5 yard pass to Chris Henry to tie up the game 21-21 at the half. With just over a minute left in the 3rd after a pretty boring quarter, Palmer hooked up with Chad Ochocinco for a 13 yard touchdown score putting the game at 28-21. Skipping through the boring and blah blah blah, both teams scored a field goal in the 4th to put the game at it’s final score.

For the end of the game highlights, Donald Driver lead all receivers with 6 receptions for 99 yards, 1 touchdown.  Ochocinco did the Lambeau Leap, that s.o.b.  Cornerback Nick Collins is now out with a shoulder injury, adding to the list of already injured defensive backs of Atari “Big Hittin’” Bigby. Next for the Packers are the 0-2 St. Louis Rams with Quarterback Marc Bulger in charge of the offense. The Packers have the big play ability on both sides of the ball to take care of the Rams early on. The Packers will either play at the Rams level or step their game up and handle business.

Favre is no Viking!!!

Posted on 28 July 2009 by James Tucker

FavreIt’s just been reported by the Star Tribune by Brad Childress that Brett Favre has finally decided to retire. Oh the shock must overwhelming for you as you read this. Not so much? That’s right after last year’s ridiculous debacle of a pre-season NFL reality show that was much more exciting than T.O’s reality show on air right which still bites, was Favre deciding whether or not he was going to retire, but eventually ending up on the New York Jets.
Last year the Packers put it to Favre that if he was going to come back in a green and gold uniform is was going to be behind future quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Of course Favre wasn’t having any of that, nor should he. So to recap, Favre threw for 344 completions in 522 attempts. Favre finished with 3472 yards and 22 touchdowns, plus 22 interceptions (you know how Favre does it!) The Jets missed out on the playoffs, finishing 9-7.
All summer long, rumors were swirling about how Favre was going to end up on the Vikings because of talks that Brett had with Vikings officials and training staff, blah, blah, blah. Right? Tavarius Jackson, the Vikings QB, must have been like wtf ’cause even his own teammates from last year were pulling for Brett to be in a purple and gold jersey, which would have made Favre the complete Anti-Christ to Packer fans even though Favre of course will be going into the Canton as Packer, unless he even renigs that and wants to go in as he came in – A Falcon.
Never the less, it would have have been 2 great games for the Packers against the Vikings if Favre did sign on for at least one more season.  Ah the drama from the Mississippi kid.  Now all the Packers have to take care of is the Bears, whom they open up the season against at home September 13.
