While on the road from Grand Rapids, Michigan to MKE for the Unlocal Clothing fashion show tonight @ Apt 720, owner Jeff Henry took time for a quick phone conversation with our Publisher and Editor, Rosebud L. Billy Hurst.
How long have you been up?
We’ve been online for 3 years now. I started creating custom pieces, then built the brand. Then I came out with seasonal collections and with the power of Myspace and facebook I built the brand some more. Now we’re over in Europe and about to open our first retail shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Where do you get all of your style from?
Basically, it’s a play on how I look a music. I am into hip hop, rock and some punk rock type shit. Unlocal fits into any genre. I wanted to create something a little more universal. It’s hip hop, rock and fashion all meshed together. I’m trying to create things that I think are cool
looking. I don’t really try to do trends. I do what I think looks good. The fact that other people like it too is great. I really don’t do it for the money. I do it for the love of making clothes and fashion.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I listen to real artists, no top 40 bullshit. The importance comes from your own and trying to get people to get into it.
How do you create your clothes?
We do all the sewing and patchwork in the house. (So every piece is really custom.) You get exactly what you see on the site, it’s our own niche that we do.
Have you done any other shows?
I’ve done shows in Chicago at Crobar, Mannequin, Red No 5 and Ruby. I really moved to Chicago 3 years ago and that’s where Unlocal came into it’s own. Now I’m in a place where I can operate more effectively and be closer to family.
What do you have coming up for the summer?
We have another fashion show June 12 at Mannequin in Chicago. Towards the end of June and July, we’ll reup the Spring line with some more summer pieces too. For August, we’ll have a big Fall collection coming out as well.
To see all of the Unlocal Clothing Spring line live check out Apt 720(720 N. Milwaukee St.) tonight… Doors open at 9pm!
